Briefcase Brigade

The Briefcase Brigade is the law school’s annual contribution to the BYU Homecoming Parade. I helped out by designing this fun little pixel briefcase to be attached to the float. But do you know what? I forgot when the parade was and ended up making it too late. So now the only utility this briefcase has is whatever enjoyment your eyeballs can draw from this very computer screen.

Law Students Recycle!

The Dean of Students here at the law school is making a push this year for law students to be better about recycling. The hope is that with a little encouragement, law students will toss their mounds of printed paper into one of the provided recycling bins rather than a trash can. I decided to “pitch in” by designing propaganda in the form of a poster (above) and an animation for the bulletin TVs (below).

The typeface featured is House Slant.

Law Review T-Shirts

The BYU Law Review asked me to design t-shirts for this year’s group of editors, and I couldn’t say no because the editor-in-chief makes cake bites. So in exchange for delicious churro-flavored cake bites, I designed this shirt. It’s a spoof on the Bluebook, which wields it’s draconian blade over everything the Law Review does.

The typeface featured is Mission Gothic.

Student Bar Association Opening Social

My first assignment as the law school P.R. Coordinator this semester was to get people pumped up for the SBA Opening Social. It’s a big party with pizza where we try to convince 1Ls that the next three years won’t be that bad. (The 1Ls know this is a ruse, but have historically agreed to eat the pizza and not say anything.) The pumping-up campaign included posters and flyers, like the one seen above, and the TV animations posted below. If I were to say the characters for this promo weren’t inspired by Bungle, I would be lying.

The TV advertisements were for the law school’s bulletin TVs, which hang in hallways around the school. This was my first time using animation for the ads. And hopefully it’s not my last, because who doesn’t enjoy the pizza guzzler:

Or the roof raiser:

Or the irresponsible party horn blower:

The typefaces featured are National Champion, Clayton, and Mission Script.

No Touchy

While it’s true that Cassidie is pregnant, it’s not true that random creepers have license to touch her belly in the grocery store. To make that clear, I tried hand lettering for the first time and made Cassidie this shirt. I should mention that my nubish attempt was greatly helped along by the efforts of Kyle Wayne Benson.

The design is loosely based on the Cylburn typface.

KWB’s Law School Logo

This logo is going to be appearing in future posts. I didn’t make it, but I’ll tell you where it came from. The great Kyle Wayne Benson was inspired by a t-shirt he found at Deseret Industries:

Just in time for my new position as P.R. Coordinator at the law school. I’m sure it will come in handy.

The design features Kyle’s very own font, National Champion!

Happy Birthday Cassidie II

It’s that time of year again, that time of year when Cassidie has a birthday and we celebrate by hanging a giant poster on the door, courtesy of the blueprint plotter at BYU. Happy birthday Cass!

The typefaces featured are Homestead and Martime Champion.

P.R. Coordinator

When it comes to being a Designer-in-Law, I’m just in it for the lulz. But that didn’t stop me from running for P.R. Coordinator on next year’s Student Bar Association board. And any good campaign needs posters, which is where the above image comes in. Back in the year 2009 or so Claire AB drew my likeness as a wizard on a bicycle to promote a now-defunct website started by Kyle Wayne Benson and me. What better way to recycle this masterpiece than as campaign promotion material? After a landslide win (nobody else ran), I’m the official 2014-15 P.R. Coordinator. This means I’ll design stuff for the school like normal, but this time with an official title.

The typeface on the poster is Clayton.

Halfway Party Posters

As a testament to how cool and interesting law students are, my artwork from 1L and 2L year was featured at the Halfway Party for 2Ls. Lookin’ good, Habibs.

Stump the Professor

Every year Women in the Law hosts Stump the Professor, one of the law school’s premier events. The event gives law students the opportunity to turn the tables on professors and their Socratic method. Professors are peppered with questions about anything from Wookie geneology to Noble gases. (As it turns out, knowing Harry Potter is usually enough to survive the gauntlet.) Best of all it supports a good cause. So I was honored when asked to design the promotional posters. Over some protest that the puns employed were a little morbid, the posters were printed and the event was a smash.

The typefaces I used to create this poster include Mission Script, Deming EP, and Clayton.
